BIO
Sayotheartist (Oluwasayo Taiwo Olowo-Ake) is a curator, singer-songwriter and artist from Nigeria currently living in Vancouver, Canada.
Growing up with parents who loved music in the vibrant city of Lagos, Nigeria, she listened to a variety of music genres from Afrobeats, to Pop, Reggae, Hip Hop, Fuji, Juju, R&B and Rap, all of which shaped her love for music early.
In 2018, she discovered her love for soul music from listening to the likes of Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield and Gladys Knight & The Pips. This formed a core element of her sound.
Her new project, entitled 25 Ifedola Street, is her first EP exploring the genre. The project also combines a catalogue and a short film, co-written and directed by Rete Poki, and entitled with the same name. With the EP’s soulful rhythms as the backdrop, the project delves into themes of memory, family and the legacy of love.
Her other projects include Hair is Architecture and Telephone [Interlude]. Sayotheartist has a podcast called Curatorial-ly Speaking, where she engages African artists in conversation about their work and practice.
